Ben Learns to Share

Listen to the Story
Little fox Ben was playing by the sparkly stream when he spotted something wonderful. A pile of smooth, colorful pebbles lay at the water's edge, glittering in the morning sun.
"These are the best pebbles ever!" Ben exclaimed, gathering them all into a little heap. "They're all MINE!"
Just then, his friend Ruby Rabbit hopped over. "Oh, Ben! What beautiful pebbles! May I have one for my collection?"
Ben's ears flattened against his head. "No! I found them first! They're ALL mine!" He wrapped his fluffy tail around the pile protectively.
Ruby's nose twitched sadly. "But Ben, there are so many. Couldn't you share just one?"
"NO, NO, NO!" Ben stamped his little paws and felt his chest getting hot and tight, just like when his den had been messy. He was about to throw a big tantrum when he remembered something.
Mama Fox had told him that keeping his den tidy helped him feel calmer and happier. Maybe... maybe sharing could make him feel good too?
Ben took a deep breath, the way Mama had taught him. He looked at the pile of pebbles, then at Ruby's hopeful face.
"Wait," Ben said quietly. He counted the pebbles. "There are twelve pebbles here. That's a lot for just one fox."
Ruby waited patiently, her long ears standing tall.
Ben thought hard. His paws had stopped stamping. His tail had relaxed. "Ruby, I'm sorry I shouted. Would you like to pick three pebbles? I can keep nine, and you can have three."
Ruby's eyes lit up like fireflies. "Really? Oh, thank you, Ben!"
As Ruby carefully chose three pretty pebbles, something magical happened. Ben felt warm and happy inside, much better than when he'd been angry.
"Look!" Ruby held up a blue pebble that sparkled. "This one looks like the sky!"
"It does!" Ben agreed, smiling. "And I have a red one that looks like a sunset!"
Suddenly, Oliver Owl swooped down from his tree. "What's all this excitement about?"
"Ben shared his pebbles with me!" Ruby said proudly.
Ben felt his chest puff up, but this time with pride, not anger. "Oliver, would you like some pebbles too? You could decorate your nest!"
Oliver's big eyes grew even bigger. "How thoughtful, Ben! I'd love two pebbles, if you can spare them."
Ben gave Oliver two of his favorite pebbles. Now he had seven left, but his heart felt fuller than ever.
"You know what?" Ben said, looking at his friends. "Sharing makes the pebbles even more special! Now when I see your pebbles, I'll remember today."
"And we'll remember how kind you were," Ruby added, giving Ben a gentle nuzzle.
That evening, Ben arranged his seven pebbles neatly in his den, which he'd been keeping tidy ever since Mama helped him clean it. Each pebble reminded him of his friends and how good it felt to share.
Mama Fox peeked into the den. "What lovely pebbles, Ben! And your den is still so neat!"
"Mama," Ben said, curling up in his cozy corner, "I almost had a tantrum today, but I remembered to take a deep breath instead. And then I shared, and it made everyone happy, including me!"
Mama Fox nuzzled her little fox. "I'm so proud of you, Ben. You're learning that being kind and sharing makes the world brighter for everyone."
Ben yawned sleepily, looking at his seven beautiful pebbles. "Tomorrow, maybe I'll find more pebbles to share," he whispered.
And with that happy thought, little Ben drifted off to sleep, dreaming of colorful pebbles and wonderful friends.
