Ben Learns About Bedtime - Chapter 10: A Birthday to Remember

Listen to the Story
Little fox Ben woke up early, his heart fluttering with excitement. Today was his birthday! He stretched his paws and looked out the window at the forest. The spring flowers were blooming just like Grandmother Owl had predicted when she taught him about the seasons.
"Good morning, birthday fox!" Mama called cheerfully from the kitchen. The most wonderful smell filled their cozy den â sweet honey cake baking in the oven.
Ben bounded downstairs, his soft, shiny fur gleaming in the morning sunlight. He had brushed it carefully the night before, and his magnificent tail looked better than ever, fluffy and proud.
"Mama, is everything ready for the party?" Ben asked eagerly.
"Almost, my dear," Mama smiled, checking her special birthday cake. "Your father is in the storage room preparing his surprise."
Ben's ears perked up. "What surprise?"
Just then, Daddy peeked around the corner wearing the silliest pointed hat Ben had ever seen. "I'm going to dress up as a funny forest dwarf and tell jokes!" he announced in a wobbly voice, making Ben giggle.
"Will you tell the one about the acorn who couldn't find his tree?" Ben asked, remembering how Daddy always made him laugh at bedtime.
"That one and many more!" Daddy promised with a wink.
Ben spent the morning setting up games in the clearing near their den. He arranged smooth stones for a hopping contest, gathered colorful leaves for a matching game, and marked spots for a dance circle. He remembered how much fun he'd had learning to dance with the fireflies last summer.
"These games will be perfect!" Ben said to himself, adjusting the last stone.
But then he paused. He thought about what Grandmother Owl had taught him about the seasons â how each one brought something special, and how important it was to appreciate every moment. Ben realized that games and cake were wonderful, but something else mattered even more.
He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He prepared his very best welcoming smile and filled his heart with good mood â the kind that makes everyone around you feel happy too.
"There," Ben whispered. "That's the most important preparation of all."
Soon, friends began arriving. Rabbit hopped up with her family, Squirrel scampered down from his tree, and even the Deer twins came with their gentle mother. Grandmother Owl flew in, her wise eyes twinkling.
"Happy birthday, Ben!" everyone cheered.
Ben greeted each friend with his warm, welcoming smile. "I'm so glad you're here! We're going to dance and laugh and play games together!"
Daddy appeared in his dwarf costume, making everyone burst into giggles. He told joke after joke, some silly, some clever, all funny.
Mama brought out the magnificent honey cake, decorated with berries and edible flowers from the spring forest.
As his friends sang the birthday song, Ben looked around at all the happy faces. The games were fun, the cake was delicious, and Daddy's jokes were hilarious. But the best part was seeing everyone enjoying themselves, laughing together, and sharing this special day.
"Thank you all for coming," Ben said, his tail swishing with joy. "This is the best birthday ever!"
Grandmother Owl nodded approvingly. "You've learned well, young Ben. The best gift you can give others is your kindness and joy."
As the sun began to set and friends said their goodbyes, Ben felt warm and grateful. All his careful preparation had worked. Everyone had a wonderful time â not just because of the games and cake, but because Ben had shared his happiness with all of them.
That night, as Mama tucked him into bed, Ben smiled sleepily. "Mama, can we have another party soon?"
Mama kissed his forehead. "Every day can be special when you greet it with a good mood and a welcoming smile, my dear Ben."
And Ben drifted off to sleep, already dreaming of tomorrow's adventures.
