Ben Learns About Bedtime - Chapter 3: The Quiet Morning Helper

Listen to the Story
The morning sun peeked through the trees, painting golden stripes across Ben's cozy den. Ben's eyes popped open, and he felt amazing! His little fox body was full of bouncy, jumpy energy.
"I'm awake! I'm awake!" Ben wanted to shout. He wanted to run in circles and sing fox songs at the top of his voice. His paws were wiggling, and his tail was swishing back and forth like a fluffy orange flag.
But then Ben remembered something important from yesterday. Mama had taught him about quiet time and how everyone needs rest. He looked over at Mama and Daddy Fox, still sleeping peacefully in their soft nest of leaves.
Mama's breathing was slow and gentle. Daddy's paws twitched softly as he dreamed. They looked so tired and so peaceful.
"They must have stayed up late taking care of our den," Ben whispered to himself, remembering how Mama had said grown-ups need rest too.
Ben's energy was bubbling inside him like a fizzy acorn drink, but he had an idea. Instead of running and playing loudly, maybe he could use his energy to help!
Very quietly, Ben tiptoed out of the sleeping area. He noticed some pinecones scattered near the entrance. "I can clean these up!" he thought.
One by one, Ben carefully picked up the pinecones with his little mouth and placed them in a neat pile outside. His paws made only the softest padding sounds on the forest floor.
Next, he saw that their water bowl was empty. Ben remembered where the clear stream was, not too far from their den. He picked up the wooden bowl carefully between his teeth and walked slowly to the stream.
The morning forest was beautiful and quiet. Birds were just starting to sing their gentle wake-up songs. Ben filled the bowl with fresh, cool water and carried it back, being extra careful not to spill.
"Look at me being a helper!" Ben thought proudly. His energy felt good when he used it for something helpful.
He gathered some fresh moss to make their sleeping nest even softer. He arranged Daddy's favorite sitting rock so it caught the nicest morning sunlight.
Just as Ben was finishing, he heard a soft yawn. Mama Fox was waking up! Her eyes opened slowly, and when she saw Ben and all the things he had done, her face lit up with the biggest, warmest smile.
"Oh, Ben!" Mama said softly, nuzzling him with her nose. "You've been such a thoughtful helper this morning. And you were so quiet! You let us rest."
Daddy Fox woke up too and looked around in surprise. "Our den looks wonderful! Did our little Ben do all this?"
Ben's chest puffed up with pride. "I felt so much energy, Daddy, but I remembered that you and Mama needed rest. So I used my energy to help instead!"
Mama hugged Ben close. "That's very grown-up of you, sweetheart. You learned that sometimes the best thing we can do with our energy is help others."
"And now," said Daddy Fox with a playful grin, "since we're all rested and the den is clean, who wants to run and play in the sunshine?"
"ME!" shouted Ben happily.
And together, all three foxes bounded out into the sparkling forest morning, playing and laughing under the tall trees. Ben had learned that helping others and thinking of their needs made him feel even better than just running and playing alone.
The forest echoed with happy fox giggles, and it was the perfect start to a beautiful day.
