Ben Learns About Bedtime - Chapter 2

Listen to the Story
Little fox Ben was having the most wonderful day in the forest. He had spent the morning playing with his friends Rosie Rabbit and Sammy Squirrel, sharing his toys just like he had learned to do. Now the sun was setting, painting the sky orange and pink.
"Time for bed, Ben!" called his mother from their cozy den.
Ben's ears drooped. "But Mama, I'm not tired at all! The fireflies are just starting to come out, and I want to chase them!"
"Little foxes need their sleep," Mama Fox said gently. "You've had a busy day of playing and sharing."
Ben thought about all the fun things he could do at night. He could count stars, listen to the owl's hooting, and maybe even see the moon rabbits dancing. "Just a little longer?" he pleaded with his biggest, brightest eyes.
Mama Fox shook her head. "No, sweetheart. It's bedtime now."
But Ben had other ideas. After his mother tucked him in, he waited until he heard her soft breathing. Then, very quietly, he tiptoed out of the den. The forest at night was magical! Ben chased fireflies, splashed in the cool stream, and tried to catch moths that fluttered around the moonflowers.
"Whoo's there?" called Oliver Owl from his tree.
"It's me, Ben! I'm staying up all night!" Ben announced proudly.
Oliver blinked his big eyes. "Are you sure that's wise, little fox?"
"I'm having too much fun to sleep!" Ben giggled and scampered off to explore more.
Ben played and played until the sky began to lighten. His paws felt heavy, and his eyes kept trying to close, but he rubbed them and kept going. Finally, as the sun peeked over the trees, Ben stumbled back to his den and fell fast asleep.
What felt like only minutes later, Ben heard Rosie Rabbit calling. "Ben! Ben! Come play! We're going to build a leaf pile!"
Ben dragged himself out of the den. His head felt fuzzy, his paws dragged, and everything seemed blurry.
"Let's race to the big oak tree!" suggested Sammy Squirrel.
Ben tried to run, but his legs wobbled. He was too tired! Sammy and Rosie zoomed ahead while Ben plodded along slowly.
"Want to share my acorns and play sorting games?" asked Sammy, remembering how nice it was when Ben shared his toys.
Ben tried to sort the acorns by size, but he kept making mistakes. His eyes wouldn't focus properly.
"Are you feeling okay?" asked Rosie, concerned.
Ben yawned so big his whiskers trembled. "I... I stayed up all night playing. I thought it would be fun, but now I'm so tired I can't enjoy anything!"
His friends walked Ben back to his den, where Mama Fox was waiting.
"I'm sorry, Mama," Ben said softly. "You were right. I needed my sleep. Now I'm too tired to play with my friends or have any fun at all."
Mama Fox nuzzled him gently. "Thank you for telling the truth, Ben. Sleep gives you energy for all the wonderful things you want to do. Rest now, and you'll feel much better."
Ben curled up in his warm bed. "From now on, I'll go to sleep on time," he murmured. "So I can have energy to play and share with my friends."
And this time, when Ben closed his eyes, he slept soundly all through the day, dreaming of all the fun he would have tomorrow â after a good night's sleep tonight!
